CHAPTER 7

“Is there ever any stop to this?” Miriam said annoyed.

“What's wrong mother?” Mellony asked. “Whatever you are reading has you upset.”

“Our population problem is not solved,” Miriam said as she tossed the paper down on the floor. “Cherla was not the answer we were looking for, maybe Quexel is but that has its own set of problems.”

“What do you mean mother?” Mellony said confused. “Meghan has been doing great things in Cherla, I am even jealous of her for ruling so young.”

“The first babies are being born,” Miriam said. “None of the girls born have the gift, they are as ordinary as any Cherlian woman.”

“What?” Mellony said nervously. “The only reason for our wars was for more land and to find more men.”

“Don’t you think I know that?” Miriam snapped. “That one child policy my grandmother put into effect is killing us slowly. Too many women and not enough men. Already there have been fights and the stealing of husbands from one side of the Queendom and hiding them on the other side. The Cherla was supposed to alleviate that, we should have looked at them closer. No woman wants a daughter that can't fight.”

“What can we do?” Mellony asked.

“There is a method,” Miriam said. “Only those who already have magic in their blood can make strong Toa daughters. Magic only exist in two places close to us, here in Toa and Quexel. Quexel has its own magic, the letter I was reading was a confirmation that some Quexelian men would be suitable.”

“Then I don't understand what has you so upset,” Mellony said. “Quexel can stop all of this.”

“Outside of your little sister, how many Quexelian men have you seen with our women?” Miriam asked.

“I haven't seen any but there has to be some,” Mellony said.

“The Quexel have long memories,” Miriam said. “Did you notice you didn’t see many men when we went to pick up Madelyn’s new husband? They have a shadow war going on that I do not know how to solve.”

“It was a disappointing trip," Mellony said. “I expected it to be like a much better version of Cherla. I was told the men were all big and strong from our women who fought in the war but I didn’t see many of them. Those that I did see did not give me more than a passing glance. In Cherla they thought it was the best thing ever seeing me. I couldn't even buy companionship in Quexel, it was a waste. I didn’t know we killed that many of their men.”

“We killed a lot of their feeble magic users,” Miriam said. “Their people all decided that we are the enemy and do not want to deal with us. Most of their men have retreated deeper into Quexel. In the places they exist alongside of our people they stay to themselves. I figured it would work itself out but now I am not so sure. It will get out that women are not having the daughters they want and I am sure Quexel will continue their shadow war and become even more vigilant.
